Itโs important because you need to make some big decisions. Your manager outlines the issues, offers some solutions and asks for thoughts. โAโ speaks up, you catch โBโ rolling their eyes. You begin to share a great idea, but youโre interrupted by โDโ, who then goes on and on, basically repeating what you just said. โEโ has some concerns but is quickly reassured by โAโ and โDโ. You notice that โFโ, attending virtually, has switched off their camera. You catch โBโ glancing at their watch. 5 mins left. Decision time. You go with one of the solutions put forward by your manager at the beginning. As you leave, you realise that โGโ has not said a word.If you're familiar with any of this, then you've encountered how biases, prejudices and exclusion seriously limit the potential of organisations. Meetings should be the very place where the diversity of all staff is harnessed to create brilliant solutions - where different life stories interact to generate innovation and avoid potential problems.Instead, meetings are so often the place where diversity is shut down.
