𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗳𝗳? 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗳𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗳𝗮𝗰𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗳𝗲𝘄 𝗘𝗗𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀? 𝗜 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻.𝗪𝗵𝗼 𝗮𝗺 𝗜?I bring 35 years of my own story to my work - teacher, political activist, work in prisons, PRUs and SEN / ALN schools. My daughter’s neurodiversity gives me insight into how to lower the barriers for people who are expected to fit into a culture that doesn’t value their differences. And I've run my own EDI business for 20 years.𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗱:Civil Service Learning, Welsh Government, Northern Ireland Assembly, The Met Office, Qualifications Wales, Morgan Stanley, SJP, NPTC Group of Colleges and many, many more.𝗣𝗶𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: You’re sitting in a meeting. It’s important because you need to make some big decisions. Your manager outlines the issues, offers some solutions and asks for thoughts. ‘A’ speaks up, you catch ‘B’ rolling their eyes. You begin to share a great idea, but you’re interrupted by ‘D’, who then goes on and on, basically repeating what you just said. ‘E’ has some concerns but is quickly reassured by ‘A’ and ‘D’. You notice that ‘F’, attending virtually, has switched off their camera. You catch ‘B’ glancing at their watch. 5 mins left. Decision time. You go with one of the solutions put forward by your manager at the beginning. As you leave, you realise that ‘G’ has not said a word.If you're familiar with any of this, then you've encountered how biases, prejudices and exclusion seriously limit the potential of organisations. Meetings should be the very place where the diversity of all staff is harnessed to create brilliant solutions - where different life stories interact to generate innovation and avoid potential problems.Instead, meetings are so often the place where diversity is shut down.
