About Andy Moore

I currently hold a fisheries scientist position at Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences. In ten years with the Bureau I have worked on Australian fisheries status reporting, including as an author and editor of Status of Key Australian Fish Stocks and Fisheries Status Reports. I provide advice to the Commonwealth government on fisheries science and management, across a range of policy issues. I am also an adjunct Senior Fellow in genetics within the Molecular Fisheries Laboratory at the University of Queensland. In these roles I have led research projects for the Federal Government including a national risk assessment of imported aquarium fish, developing methodologies for a National Recreational Fishing Survey and a national survey of Southern Bluefin Tuna recreational catch, management of genetic resources for fish and crustaceans in the Murray-Darling Basin, maintaining genetic diversity in Australian native fish and genetic stock structure and stock assessment for commercially important fish species. I have produced 74 scientific publications, many articles on popular science for magazines and provided over 40 seminars and presentations. I have held 20 scientific advisory positions at the national and state level and my research has been covered on Catalyst, The Science Show, Tipple J and Totally Wild. I have received awards from the World Genetics Congress and the Society for Fish Biology and was on the Dean’s List at Southern Cross University. I have also served in an executive role for the Australian Society for Fish Biology.I have previously worked as a research fellow at Southern Cross University, and for the Australian Fisheries Management Authority. I ran a successful scientific consulting company for eight years, specialising on aquatic surveys, floodplain management and general fisheries issues, where I was part of several national reviews for the Department of Environment.
