About Andy Stott
I was a science adviser in Defra for 30 years until I retired in 2023. I am now sharing my experience and knowledge in a number of positions: Defra's Biodiversity Expert Committee; British Ecological Society Climate Change Special Interest Group; scoping expert for IPBES 2nd global assessment. I was awarded a MBE for services to nature and climate in the 2024 New Years Honour List. In Defra I provided advice for policy development on biodiversity, nature recovery, land use, climate change, environmental statistics and assessments covering both domestic (UK) and international domains. I was a lead negotiator for the UK at COP15 – the UN Biodiversity Summit in Montreal – leading on the conservation targets for the new Global Biodiversity Framework and co-chair of the contact group which negotiated its monitoring and review mechanisms. I was also the UK National Focal Point for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) and was active during its inception and establishment. On the domestic side, I led the evidence review and development of the outcome indicator framework for the 25 Year Environment Plan in England and the evaluation of Nature Improvement Areas.
