Storytelling has been my life for 35 years. So, how happy was I to discover that everyone form Steve Jobs to Arianna Huffington reckons one of the most important activities a business can focus on is spinning yarns? Radio, TV, Print, Online, longform, shortform, videos, social media – I’ve done them all. My story? It’s time to break out my skills into a fresh environment. You cannot fight your audience: One of the biggest changes the era of digital journalism brought was the explosion in data. It changed the game. As an online news editor I spent a lot of time looking at data, and one thing I learnt was you must listen to your audience and learn how to deliver what they want, not just what you think they need. But, I also worked through a period when “clicks” were prioritised. The big lesson there was that an organisation’s values matter. Numbers are important, but the choice of numbers is vital.There’s no “I” in team but there is a me (sort of): and since 1995, that “me” has been involved in building teams, transforming teams and, recently, very sadly, letting a team go. I love developing people’s talents, matching strengths to others’ weaknesses, encouraging people to take on new challenges. As video news editor, I refocussed The Age video team from producing long, arts-inspired videos attracting a couple of thousand views, to short, sharp breaking news videos with views in the tens of thousands.
