I am like Batman. Cleaning the city streets of garbage. Unlike Batman, the 'garbage' I pick up, is actually garbage – everyday trash from modern society. At my studio I analyze it, looking at the trash carefully, noting its use, meaning and why it was thrown out. The gutters of our lives are full of interesting things, discarded, dirty, grimy and forgotten. I take these items and assemble surfaces, gluing, screwing, and attaching things together. Next, I paint over the whole lot with images and words that take a funny look at modern life. The 'norm' of modern living is my main target victim. The result is a humorous textured brightly colored eye catching contraption/painting. A subvert. I do this to bring awareness to the viewer about the costs of mass produced consumption. To reveal a new perspective that is hidden behind the 'fun-ness' of a product. Junk food additives and petroleum based carcinogenic colors, cheap labor, and toxic waste, all hidden from view, covered up, buried and discarded. I find a lot of truth about modern living in the gutters of our streets.
