I joined Broadcast Australia in 2013 and have enjoyed the challenge of transferring my practical engineering skills and process driven mindset to a more managerial role. In three and a half years I have managed over 250 site projects ranging from $20,000 up to $1.5 million and covered a variety of technical aspects including FM and AM transmitter installs, cutting edge DAB installations, asbestos remediations, fire system upgrades and HVAC installations to name a few. I am proud to have been instrumental in kick-starting a multimillion dollar project for BA with a new client that used cutting edge digital HF technology, never before used in Australia and it also opened the doors for BA to potentially become the national authority on this technology.In my final year at BA I was specifically selected for my interpersonal skills, to manage a disparate team spread across the country. The team had underperformed under previous management and it was vital to re-unite them and move forward with their tasks. I'm proud to say we had a great 8 months, completing 10 site projects across the country to a very high standard.I still keep my hands 'on the tools' by commissioning many of the installations myself, wherever possible, and during my time at BAI, I earned the qualification of Prince2 Certified Practitioner.

I was the sole SNG operator for the Brisbane and South East Queensland area, servicing Astralinks' client base in the region and beyond. I maintained the QLD vehicle and designed and installed new upgrades when required. I also facilitated a number of new protocols within the company, improving team communications and inter-state efficiency.

Working in the Technical Services department of Seven's Martin Place facility, the team and I looked after the install, maintenance and operation of all technical aspects of the studios, edit suits, distribution and disaster recovery. I initiated, designed, managed and completed a number of projects whilst at Seven, including a complete re-design and install of the State Parliament offices on Macquarie St and also a Chief of Staff desk upgrade for the Newsroom, all undertaken with minimum budget and crucial time restrictions.I was also part of the rapid deployment SNG team who attended many of the larger news events including the Queensland Floods and the Christchurch Eathquake.

As a lead engineer I was expected to maintain and operate any one of the 7 vehicle based systems and 3 fly-away systems GlobeCast owned during the time I was there. I attended to all preventative and continuing maintenance and was expected to be able to fix any of the associated equipment in the field, or the workshop. Regularly representing GlobeCast to their clients in areas such as sales, negotiation and technical planning, it was more than just a technician's role, it was marketing, branding and sales as well. All of the systems were designed and built in-house by the team and I, we utilised CAD schematics for all wiring, wired the looms ourselves and installed all equipment with the exception of the vehicle coachwork, which was outsourced. This made for a very cohesive and well rounded team, all conversant with the tiniest details of the systems used and elevated them above simple 'operators'.

‘Multi-skilled Operator’ is a BBC term that essentially means any member of the team (whilst specialising) will not only perform a single role. As such, I was fully capable and trained in many technical fields including SNG, studio and field camera, editing, transfers, audio and more besides. I was also selected as one of two BBC Regions representatives to train other staff throughout the UK and, in collaboration with my partner, I penned a comprehensive training course to do so.Furthermore, I designed and delivered what was dubbed ‘the most economical SNG regional vehicle the BBC had ever purchased’. This halved their usual expenditure without any compromise to the vehicles’ abilities, and enabled a simple and cheap upgrade option that turned this ‘talking-head’ truck into a fully capable 4 camera OB van.My time at the BBC was a wonderful learning opportunity and really developed me as a Broadcast professional.

Locked-On Communications operated primarily in the middle east, covering the international news for American networks such as ABC, CBS and Fox News. During my time there I not only designed and built fly-away systems, but as they were installing a remote network office, I was also expected to engineer the electrics, phone systems, IP networks, edit suites, generators and maintain everything electrical in the entire outfit, from the cameras and lights, to the satellite equipment, to the producers hairdryer. I also helped innovate an MPEG-4 IP content distribution system via one-way satellite, reducing costs and company overheads by 60/70% whilst opening doors to new business and markets at the same time. This seems commonplace nowadays, but was very new back in 2002.
