The Energy Trading Manager role is focused on performing all actions associated with the delivery of the Flick Electric Co. hedging strategy and supporting policy. This includes analysis, modelling and operational trading to secure competitively priced electricity that results in the optimal hedge management of Flick's current fixed product offers. Channels such as trading on-exchange futures, over-the-counter deals and power purchase agreements are utilised.In addition, the position leads in developing and executing retail pricing strategies, along with growing the value of Flick's hedge book through the introduction of new products, load optimisation and adding tenure through longer term generation contracts.

This role involved the creation and development of various models relating to Contact’s generation assets, and various portfolio analysis. Specifically, the creation of a portfolio optimisation model to maximise value from the generation fleet, as well as deriving a value of stored gas (natural gas stored within Contact’s new underground storage facility) and a gas management strategy. This included a substantial amount of linear programming, optimisation and simulation. Other work included future revenue analysis for the potential acquisition of generation assets available for purchase on the market, portfolio impacts of wholesale contracts and historical wholesale market price behaviour analysis. Tools used included Excel, VBA and SAS.

This position involved the analysis and negotiation of large wholesale and hedge energy deals with other electricity generators and NZEM participants. These deals involved financial contracts such as Contracts For Difference (CFDs), negotiated on an over-the-counter basis with counterparties. Also involved in the role on the hedging side of the business is participation on behalf of Meridian in the EnergyHedge market, an exchange-style mechanism which involves trading CFDs directly with other participants.Other responsibilities included managing the invoicing of large industrial customers, most notably Rio Tinto Alcan New Zealand (formerly Comalco), New Zealand’s largest single energy consumer, on a monthly and quarterly basis. Also, regular maintenance and administration of related databases was a key responsibility.

This was a sole charge role, managing Meridian’s obligations to the New Zealand Electricity Market which involved offering energy produced from the company’s generation assets in real-time into the market while bidding as a purchaser to supply customers (retail/industrial) on contract. This position was responsible for the majority of Meridian’s financial risk and wholesale revenues.The role included a number of accountabilities/responsibilities:• Maximising revenues at all times• Managing and mitigating transmission risk, solving grid constraints• Managing Meridian’s generation and hydrological assets, within physical and consent limitations• Participating in Hedge Market trading (CFDs) when required• Market analysis and research into competitor behaviour

Role involved collection of oceanographic and other hydrodynamics data, post-processing, analysis and interpretation. Position included;• Interaction with such instruments such as Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers, Conductivity Temperature Depth Profilers and VHF GPS transmitting drogues. • This role involved extensive use of the mathematical package Matlab, including the loading of large amounts of field data, the construction of scripts, functions and GUIs to analyse and present physical data, along with the development of programs to be used as standard analytical packages within NIWA for use with scientific instrumentation.• Working environments included coastal regions, the outer EEZ and international waters, and Antarctica (McMurdo Sound- Near-Ice Boundary Layer Experiment). • Co-authoring commercial reports • Maintaining and administering NIWA’s internal Marine Physics data archive and intranet site • Processing of sea surface temperatures from NOAA satellites and sea surface height analysis using Topex-Poseidon data. • Significant sea-going component included.
