After nearly eight years as a newspaper reporter, I shifted careers to strategic communications. I worked on internal and external communications at the University of Kansas and KU Medical Center for 10 years, working with senior university leadership on messaging related to the university's public imaging and brand. I then had the opportunity to tie all those things together in my role as assistant director of communications and public affairs for the government of Johnson County, Kansas, where I help direct a staff of talented communicators and specialists to use communications to help my home county of 620,000 people accomplish its goals.
