Implemented and supported multiple Government critical Oracle E-Business Suite 11i (Financials & HRMS) environments and implementations. Technical lead for planing and executing all system upgrades and HRMS regulatory and tax-year-end mandatory maintenance. Being a government end-client, this assignment required security clearance and absolute discretion and professionalism in handling and processing multiple classifications of data. It was my first real foray into public sector and gained some great insight into the complexities of working cross department , as well as reacting to and handling external political influences.

Started out on a two-year Graduate Recruitment program as a poor Software Engineer, ended as a more rounded person with purpose and sense of direction. Here I discovered my passion lay in helping people and solving business problems, rather than sat in the back-office churning out (less than good) code in an IDE. After the 1st six month rotation, I proved the value of being in the right place at the right time when over-hearing a conversation in a corridor regarding a post in their Oracle team. By the end of the month I was immersing myself in the weird and sanity-testing world of custom Oracle E-Business Suite ERP implementations and upgrades. Sorry Oracle, but back then even getting the installers to launch was entirely dependent on which direction the wind was blowing. Oracle also got so much right though, and I was hooked.I have great memories from my time at DHL, privileged to work in an amazing multi-national LAS (Local Accounting System) Oracle team, travelling and successfully delivering together multiple EBS solutions specialising in Release 10.7 - 11.0.3 / 11i upgrades in countries preparing for Euro adoption (Euro as Functional Currency (EFC) and Multiple Reporting Currencies (MRC). Here I really understood the value of team unity, laser-focused direction, having unwavering trust in your colleagues, the buzz from from being trusted, and the sheer productivity this bond created in knowing we absolutely succeeded or failed as one. Many of us still periodically meet up nearly 20 years on, which is great.

The 3rd year of my sandwich degree. My love of combustion engines stood me in good stead this year also.During this placement year I swapped my now unroadworthy Mini with a colleague for a £25 Gift Voucher. All was not lost, as I was now the proud owner of an oil-burning Ford Escort 1.6L estate. Thankfully my Team Lead offered the use of hie driveway and I spent a Saturday replacing the valve-stem oil seals. Cars apart, I wast privileged to get the opportunity to work amongst so many bright and insightful people. I had some interesting exposure to desktop support for Windows '95, and could patch Token Ring networks blindfolded before the year was out. I learnt the difference between AGR and Magnox nuclear reactors, and built relationships with people that last to this day, from network engineers to Radiation Chemists.

This represents my first proper part-time job (during studies), based on the Meat Department. A shift typically comprised of meat preparation, shrink-wrapping, cabinet replenishment and equipment dismantling & deep-cleaning. It was a job I nearly never got in answering the HR Manager's settling question of "What does your Mum and Dad do?". "My Dad's deceased and my Mum is just a housewife". The rest of the interview passed in my being educated in how incredibly hard the role of the housewife is. Tumbleweed.I got the job. This was an early lesson in learning to deal with the faults of others as gently as my own, and that there are consequences to thoughtless words (though said unintentionally). Always a petrol-head, it allowed me to save and pay for my first car, an Austin Mini in British Racing Beige(!) with a Webasto roll-away roof. The roads of Coventry were now slightly less safe.

After early-teens paper-boy, this was my 1st paying summer job, immersing myself in the world of table-cleaning, washing up and vending machine replenishment during events at the NAEC for the incumbent catering provider. I learnt that customers liked to mix tomato ketchup and cigarette butts together in ashtrays and the value of barrier cream. It taught me what it was to graft 7:00 am to 9:30 pm, and the joy from doing a good day's labour for a fair reward.
