Being on the vendor side of the localization business is all about execution. Since localization is about cultural and contextual adaptation of web content, often managed by non-natives of the target locale, the workflow can be chaotic. Projects are often delegated by multiple, disparate client side points of contact at highly variable intervals, 24/7. The localization project manager role is best described as proactive planning, real time risk assessment, and resourceful workflow prioritization. Ultimately, the LPM is accountable for maintaining costs, quality and timely delivery of mission critical marketing and communications materials.Handling 30+ locales for two accounts was a big challenge that took meticulous organization and rapid problem solving skills to accomplish. With many simultaneous projects, consisting of multiple languages, across multiple locales, and multiple platforms, there wasn’t much room for surprises to delay timelines. The best way to provide excellent customer service in such an environment is to quickly identify the root cause of issues and maintain close communication with the client stakeholders. I always work to put into practice policies that prevent an issue from recurring and turning management of a critical project into a firefight.
