About Andy Tran

Andy Tran is a Principal at Matrix Capital Management | Biotech Investor | Board Director at Matrix Capital Management Company, L.P.. He possess expertise in computational biology, genetic engineering, immunoassays, c, computer hardware and 21 more skills. Colleagues describe him as "I had the pleasure of working with Andy while he was a researcher in our lab at Rice. An incredibly disciplined, highly motivated, enthusiastic doer and learner -- Andy, blew all of my expectations of what a student in high school was capable of. Consistently he demonstrated a willingness to put in long hours -- developing assays, engineering microfluidic biochips, and doing heavy literature reviews -- all while balancing his full-time load in school. Repeatedly, I heard co-workers praise Andy for being one of the single best student researcher we've had, pointing to the stark contrast between his strong work ethic and the usual (minimally involved) undergraduate researcher we're accustomed to. More than anything, I've truly enjoyed my time getting to know Andy. He is a superbly intelligent young man who possesses the rare quality of being both highly ambitious and yet utterly humble. I have the deepest confidence in his ability to be a key player in any team he joins, and I look forward to watching as he paves his own way in the scientific community."

Engineering molecular technologies to precisely edit the genome and developing a next-generation sequencing platform to quantify the molecular "age" (therefore health) of a cell.· Developing and applying CRISPR/Cas9 system for precise, targeted re-activation of genes (TERT, TFAM, GDF-11, NAMPT) normally down-regulated during senescence for the development of age reversal and cancer therapies.· Developing a next-generation sequencing platform of key CpG sites to analyze methylation and other epigenetic features in order to (1) establish a panel of diagnostic aging biomarkers and (2) using that information to generate an algorithm or quantitative model that can calculate the molecular “age” of the cell.· Synthesized Adeno-associated virus (AAV) vectors for delivery of CRISPR Cas9 constructs into mice for in vivo testing of activators.· Designed and engineered a photo-activated CRISPR/Cas9 construct that allows high-resolution spatial and temporal precision in human genome engineering upon light stimulus.

  • Rice University
    Medical Microfluidics Lab Researcher
    Rice University 2011 - 2014
    Houston, Tx, Us
Designed and implemented an agarose bead-based microarray within a microfluidic platform that rapidly captures and detects various key biomarkers of cardiovascular disease and cancer via micro-sandwich immunoassay. · CAD designed via Solidworks and rapid prototyped multiple iterations of a self-contained microfluidic chip via xurography and photolithography.· Chemically synthesized three-dimensional agarose microbeads for anchoring and concentrating capturing antibodies for the specific fluorescent detection of cTnI, CK-MB, myoglobin, NT-proBNP (specific biochemical markers of cardiovascular disease) and CA-125(ovarian cancer biomarker).Ultimately, developed a sensor with limits of detection that meets clinical cut-off values for key biomarkers in sub-15 minutes time with less than 100uL of blood--thereby producing a rapid point-of-care diagnosis for a range of cardiac diseases and cancers.· The system was verified with 200 clinical patient samples of a range of cardiovascular health and accuracy/limits of detection compared successfully(R2=99.2%) against gold standard ELISA systems and commercial machines.· By chemically modifying antibody and micro-bead synthesis and optimizing optics detection software, the platform can be reprogrammed to detect any known biomarker, potentially allowing the device to be a universal, point-of-care disease detection platform.
  • Rice University
Nanotherapeutics And Drug Delivery Lab Researcher
    Rice University 2010 - 2011
    Houston, Tx, Us
Designed and synthesized chitosan nanoparticles, a low cytotoxicity, biodegradable, and PEGylated drug vector used to selectively deliver si-RNA molecules to ovarian cancer cells while evading the host’s immune system.· Used confocal laser scanning microscopy and fluorescence activated cell sorting to detect and quantify targeted intracellular uptake of nanoparticles in cancer cells.· Conducted live-cell imaging assays to track and analyze the trajectory of particles to understand the intracellular transport mechanisms of si-RNA nanoparticles in cancer cells.· Conducted a comprehensive array of in vitro assays manipulating the biochemical environment of the cells to determine the clinical efficacy of the nanoparticles in a protein-rich environment such as the blood. SDS-PAGE analysis was also conducted to determine if any key proteins inhibited the nanotherapeutic’s efficacy.
