My research involves the planning, implementation and evaluation of large-scale randomized control trials (RCTs) in low- and middle-income countries. Running an RCT includes many stages, from the conceptual design of the intervention to the recruitment and training of field staff on the ground, the implementation under real-world conditions while staying true to the research methodology, the organization of large-scale household surveys, the collection and subsequent analysis of data, and the writing of both academic and policy publications. Crucially, field experiments rely on a close cooperation with institutional partners. Past institutional partners who helped me to implement my research include vocational training providers in Morocco, the French Public Employment Service, health providers in Kenya, and several microfinance organizations in the Philippines. I thus use a variety of skills in my work, from close collaboration and coordination of policymakers, to project management on the ground, to conceptual work, data collection through household surveys, data analysis, and the drafting of both policy reports and academic papers.I am particularly interested in why people so often fail to make profitable investments – choices with costs in the present and benefits in the future – even when standard economic barriers (information, credit constraints, access) are minimal or absent. Applications range across many areas of life, and around the world – from financial decisions to investments in one's health, human capital, employment path, or business. A strong past focus of my work has been the impact of time preferences and self-control on individuals' lives. More recently, I am studying the importance of individuals' beliefs about themselves (captured in psychological concepts like agency and self-efficacy) for economic decisionmaking.
