Truer Medical Inc. is an ISO 13485 and FDA-certified medical device manufacturing company that manufactures Class I and II airway management and temperature sensing products. Being that Truer Medical is a small, family-owned business, I have the opportunity to work closely with the company's president, Tim Truitt, and gain exposure to a varirty of skillsets within the engineering industry. After working there, I grew a deep interest in pursing industry following my undergraduate education compared to pursuing dentistry (which was my initial plan). During my internship experience, I was able to learn about the manufacturing industry, work on technical documentation, and edit drawings via SolidWorks. As a Mechanical Engineer for Truer Medical Inc., I have performed a range of tasks including: SOP documentation, R&D, authorship of DHFs and DMRs, functional testing, product design, and internal audits. In preparation for the company's ISO audit, I was responsible for resolving gaps within the company’s quality control system and resolving findings following the audit. My experience at Truer Medical has given me the background to investigate potential liabilities within a product and pay great attention to detail when adhering to compliance standards which could be translated to a variety of professional endeavors. These projects in addition to competitor research, a mock recall, and technical documentation fostered a comprehensive, learning experience. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to gain industry insights and exposure to several business functions that will serve integral to my success as a young professional.

Biomechanics Researcher

I conducted research for Dr. McHenry at the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UC Irvine with the hopes of using my research background in biological and neurological research in a biomechanics lab. After conducting research, I fell in love with the rigorous data collection process, project design, project redirection, and managing project progression. As a biomechanics researcher, my research consisted of performing kinematic experiments to train a deep-learning neural network, DeepLabCut, to track actively swimming fish and develop a 3D reconstruction of the freely swimming fish and its respectively moving particles. Both 3D reconstructions, fish and particles, would be characterized in a combined interface and were of interest to the Office of Naval Research to further the understanding of the hydrodynamics of objects within water. During my research experience, I lead an independent schooling behavior project to characterize how the lateral line and vision contribute to the schooling behavior of tetra fish. I had the opportunity to design experiments; set up the camera, video, and lighting equipment; and construct figures using MATLAB.It was during this project that I drafted a grant proposal and was awarded the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Fellowship to fund my research. I had the opportunity to present my findings to colleagues at the California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) Statewide Research Symposium and compose a research poster. These experiences in addition to laser cutting, Adobe Illustrator, DeepLabCut, camera, and lighting set-up, made for a holistic research experience. I am so grateful I had the opportunity to grow as a researcher and gain exposure to the responsibilities of a graduate student.

I conducted research for Dr. Mednick at the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at UC Irvine with the hopes of expanding my perspective of academic research and conducting research for a larger-scale, more technical-focused laboratory. After conducting research, I enjoyed collaborating with a variety of researchers to interpret the data and troubleshoot the MATLAB script As a Data Preprocessor, my research comprised preprocessing electroencephalogram (EEG) data using MATLAB to analyze the effects a new insomnia drug have on a patient's neural sleep activity. A company that's introducing the new insomnia drug was undergoing clinical trials and commissioned Dr. Mednick's lab to compare the patient's neural sleep activity relative to its competitors. During my research experience, I was responsible for preprocessing EEG data, reporting anomalies, and submitting data reports. It was in this role that I worked closely with the Ph.D. candidates, collaborated with undergraduate researchers, and communicated findings to the project lead. What I learned the most from this position was not how to program in MATLAB or interpret EEG signals, but to successfully work in a team to accomplish a common goal. I am grateful for this experience and I will use these skills in my professional career.

The Patient Project is a campus organization at the University of California- Irvine that was founded with the mission of revolutionizing the patient waiting room experience. When considered, the waiting room could provide an intimidating environment for patients of which the majority wait alone or in silence. In 2019, the Patient Project partnered with the Children’s Hospital of Orange County to provide fun activities for children at the Neuroscience Outpatient Institute. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, students were unable to volunteer in person and an opportunity to innovate arose. It was apparent that during the pandemic everyone was in a waiting room-type experience together - waiting for an eventual return to normalcy. With the mission to revolutionize the waiting room experience through building community, there were three aspects of The Patient Project adopted that achieve this: 1. Patience and Pandemic journal; 2. Conversational Care program; and 3. Community Journal. As an Outreach Committee Member, I was responsible for managing the Conversational Care program and contributing to the Patience and Pandemic journal. For the Patience and Pandemic journal, I served as an editor which the journal has been published on Amazon and has been adopted by the UC History Digital Archives. In the Conversational Care program, the Patient Project partnered with the local seniors center in Orange County to provide theme-based programs for seniors. For this program, I lead outreach efforts to partner with the senior centers, train volunteers, draft programming as well as draft grant proposals to secure funding for the organization. Throughout my experience with the Patient Project, I developed a multitude of skills that helped me successfully lead a body of students and leave a lasting impact during a time when many, especially the elderly, felt isolated.

The Patient Safety Movement Foundation is a nonprofit organization that is committed to achieving zero preventable deaths within healthcare organizations by providing Actionable Patient Safety Solutions (APSS) guided by global patient safety experts. As a Clinical Content Researcher, I gathered information on common health concerns (e.g. Medication Safety, Neonatal Care, HAIs...etc.) in clinical and hospital settings that span over 60 different countries to bring awareness to medical practices that impact patient safety. One example of a project that I worked on was documenting patient and clinician assumptions that could impact patient care, preventative care, and the types of treatment a patient receives. By researching case studies and medical errors, the information collected was implemented into the APSS documents for hospitals and clinics to “pledge” and take actionable steps towards preventing "preventable deaths." I have been fortunate to have received authorship on 10 APSS documents which are available in 60 different countries and are recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute of Health (NIH). As an intern, I was responsible for compiling clinical research, coordinating meetings, and communicating with global patient safety experts to edit the APSS documents, ensuring the content is accurate and updated. My experience at the Patient Safety Movement Foundation has not only further enhanced my writing skills but has opened my eyes to another side of healthcare.

I conducted research for Dr. Tombola at the Department of Biophysics and Physiology at the UC Irvine School of Medicine with the hopes of gaining exposure to biological research and the workload of graduate students. After conducting research, I fell in love with research and solving complex problems that are considered "cutting edge" in the field. As a biological researcher, my research covered protein bonding analysis of the Hv1 proton channels which have been known to be highly expressed in metastatic breast cancer cells and during ischemic stroke. It is believed that inhibition of the Hv1 channel could potentially reduce the metastasis of breast cancer cells and reduce the incidence of ischemic stroke. Therefore, it was of interest to understand model organisms and their similar proton channels. One such organism was Emiliania huxleyi and its EhHvCN1 channel. During my research experience, I was responsible for researching current literature, performing western blots, and proposing a transfection method for the Emiliana huxleyi proteins. It was during this project that I drafted a grant proposal to secure project funding and presented my findings to colleagues at the annual California Alliance for Minority Participation (CAMP) Statewide Research Symposium where I was selected to receive the Best Presentation Award. These experiences in addition to western blots, autoclaving, ImageLab, cell culture, and more made for a holistic informative research experience. I am grateful for this experience and I will use these skills within my professional career.
