Phi Nguyen is pursuing an Intercalated MBChB-MPH degree. He is currently navigating his third year in the MBChB program, alongside his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology & Biostatistics at the University of Cape Town (UCT). A graduate of the German International School of Cape Town, where he earned a dual matric certificate encompassing the German Abitur and the IEB (Kombi-ABI & IEB). Despite having the opportunity to study Medicine internationally in Germany and Europe, Phi chose UCT, driven by a deep sense of responsibility to make a positive impact on the South African community he proudly calls home.Phi's early experiences volunteering at SHAWCO health and active participation in the UCT Surgical Society during his first year have been transformative. They opened his eyes to the profound impact aspiring medical professionals can have on people's lives even before completing formal education. This shift in perspective—from curing individual patients to maximizing community well-being—has become the driving force behind his journey.Phi's interest in this dual-degree path has been ignited by a profound transformation in his perspective on medicine. Initially drawn to the idea of curing individual patients, Phi came to recognise that medicine encompasses a broader mission—to maximize the well-being of communities through preventive healthcare and addressing the many factors influencing disease progression. This realisation has fuelled his passion for Population Health, Public Health and Epidemiology as a whole. Phi's goal is to acquire essential skills and valuable research experience, evolving into a healthcare professional who seamlessly integrates clinical expertise with a researcher's mindset. He is very enthusiastic about the intercalated pathway, believing in the significant value of acquiring supplementary skills during his formative years as a medical student.With his multilingual background and the fusion of South African, Vietnamese, and German influences, Phi aspires to make a global impact by changing the world for a better future. His vision involves continuous learning and a commitment to improving equity and social justice in healthcare. Specifically, Phi is deeply interested in Global Health & Surgery, spanning Orthopedic, Neuro, and Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as exploring the fields of Neuroscience and Rheumatic Heart Disease. During downtime, you'll find Phi on the mountain, in the ocean, or spending cherished moments with family and friends— having a passion for healthcare with appreciation for life's simple joys.
