Isolation has the ability to limit not only the scope of a child's surroundings, but also his or her aspirations to influence the world. With the lack of a familiar school setting to help cultivate the minds of these children and bring their visions to life, many children are burdened not only by their illness but also their hopes and desires. While school is crucial for education, it is also important in gaining interpersonal communication skills. Children who have long-term hospital stays miss out on the developmental skills they will need later on in life. Acknowledging this problem, YouAB Learning, a nonprofit organization at UAB, has been designed to develop an elementary setting for kids of similar ages to interact and relax in a familiar school surrounding.YouAB Learning aims to prepare the patients of Children’s of Alabama to excel in the classroom by following a rigorous curriculum tailored specifically for each individual child’s needs.
