Each day I manage the day to day operations of the business which includes helping my staff to oversee about 200 instructors. We ensure that the tutors are meeting each student’s needs by reviewing the previous day’s session notes and communicating with parents about each child’s progress. In addition, I work with parents as a consultant. Each day I help moms and dads troubleshoot various educational issues. But primarily I work with parents on exploring their options for selecting a private school for their child. Parents come to me when they are trying to make a list of schools that are the best fit. Together we create a list of reach, safety, and target schools. I help guide them through the entire admissions process from tours and interviews to helping them with the decision making process.

When I first came to Fairfax County in 1992 I worked as a special education teacher with fourth graders. I loved that role, but I also wondered what life would be like as a general education teacher. After four years in special education, I began teaching sixth grade as a general education teacher. I found that the strategies I used as a teacher of students with special needs were extremely applicable to my general classroom. For the next two years I worked with a diverse student population from those who were gifted to those who needed remedial support. It was then that I realized that, although I had the capacity to influence many lives, I was unable to reach every child in a classroom of thirty students. After school every day, I tutored students and saw that one-to-one instruction had a huge impact on their academic progress. In 1998 I made the difficult decision to leave teaching, after the birth of my first son, to found Educational Connections, Inc.
