Group Facilitator

The Program For Intergroup Relations

The University Of Michigan

The Program for Intergroup Relations at the University of Michigan is an academic department with a focus on social justice education. To partly achieve this education, IGR organizes dialogues with different social identity focuses (race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, etc.,) called Intergroup Dialogues. As a freshman in college, I took an Intergroup Dialogue on Race & Ethnicity. I never expected that at the University of Michigan, one of the largest public universities in the United States, that I would be sitting in a circle talking about individual feelings and experiences of identity in order learn, but there I was. Dialogue is usually made up of a group of around 15-20, and led by two students. There are no PhDs, professors, or associate professors in the room, just students with personal experiences. Through vulnerability, honesty, and trust, I learned more in this dialogue than I have in all of my courses at Michigan. After a foundation course in skills needed to effectively facilitate multicultural group interactions along with structured intergroup dialogues, I was ready to facilitate. I co-facilitated a dialogue with 15 students with a focus on race and ethnicity. As the privileged facilitator in dialogue, I was challenged in many ways to be open about my dominant position in society. At the same time, my vulnerability and willingness to challenge my own status quo helped set an example of action and engagement, despite my position of power or oppression. Self-reflection is key group, so we can all be teachers and learners in the space. Through many ups and downs, connections and conflicts, I believe that my group walked away from dialogue feeling engaged about activism and hopeful about challenging current societal narratives and structures of discrimination.I am excited to apply my skills as a facilitator, no matter the dialogue topic, to all of my academic, social, and professional endeavours.
