At UNC, my work has focused on the characterization and use of iontophoresis, which allows delivery of femtomoles of drug to the brain via an applied current. I have worked extensively on the characterization of iontophoretic ejections from micro-capillaries using fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV) , CE, HPLC, ESEM, and confocal microscopy to characterize the ejection bolus. I also currently use this iontophoretic technique to locally apply femtomoles of drug to discrete regions of the brain to modulate cell firing and neurotransmitter release in anesthetized and awake behaving rats. The rest of my research uses FSCV to monitor oxygen in vivo and investigate the roles of calcium and neurotransmitters in local oxygen changes in the brain.

Used HPLC in combination with radiotracer analysis to provide preliminary identification of the extracted bound residues of trinitrotoluene (TNT) in earth worms. Mass spectrometry was used for verification of TNT and its metabolites as the bound residues.
