A hands-on family project converting an off-grid red-brick barn. The project was an education to the realities of renewable energy and project management. I investigated options of renewable energy generation and storage vs connecting to the grid, considering availibility of government feed-in tariffs. I immersed myself in the project as the builders' labourer and learnt the practical side of construction.

I enjoyed my 3 month internship in Ghana in which I worked in a small Ghanaian structural design company designing multi-storey buildings in accordance with BS8110. My responsibilities included structural calculations, producing bar bending schedules and complying with architectural designs. I was awarded a University of Birmingham travel grant to cover travel expenses.

In search of adventure and new experiences I organised an entirely self-initiated two month engineering placement in Uganda, in which I immersed myself in the local culture. The experience involved comparing the social, economical and engineering aspects of labour-based to mechanised road construction methods. I spent time with UNRA and a labour-based training school. Experiences included site, office and laboratory work, for example re-grading, priming, lime stabilisation and surveying.
