Community Planting Manager
As a community planting manager, I worked with San Francisco residents to plant as many street trees as possible. I worked with residents to cut concrete and plant street trees at no cost to them. During non-COVID times, all my work led up to large, biweekly neighborhood planting events. Together, we planted 100 trees in a single Saturday morning. During the pandemic, we transitioned to planting the same number of trees using only small staff crews, myself included. My role is to work with the community throughout the process and coordinate getting trees in the ground. I select species for each site, wrangle subcontractors, inspect sites for utility conflicts, communicate with residents, organize volunteers on planting day, source healthy trees, and oversee the planting of every tree. I also physically planted the trees using best management practices, and I conducted post-planting surveys to ensure the trees successfully transplant into their new environment.
Restoration Planting Manager
When a street tree in San Francisco fails, I replant it. My goal is to ensure the tree will be thriving 40 years from the date I plant it, so I use the principle of "right tree, right place" to decide on an appropriate species. I consult with residents to choose tree species that will thrive on their street, taking into consideration utility infrastructure and city code, the San Francisco micro-climates, future climate considerations, species resilience to known pests, and abiotic factors. Each week, I plant up to 35 trees alongside other staff using ISA best management practices. I succeed in my work because of my strong project management skills, communication skills, arboricultural knowledge, and commitment to the environment.
Regulatory Analyst: Electricity Policy And Climate Change
As a regulatory analyst for the Public Advocates Office, I worked with a team on climate change issues related to the state's Renewables Portfolio Standards. I represented ratepayer interests in utility applications to procure renewable resources. It was my job as an analyst to ensure that 1) costs were just and reasonable, and 2) the proposals were consistent with State environmental policy goals. I also reviewed renewable resource procurement contracts for cost-effectiveness and protested them if they were not cost-effective.
Graduate Student Program Evaluator
Summer Associate
As a summer fellow for Montgomery County, I researched and provided recommendations for several local policy issues both independently and with members of my cohort. I conducted in-person interviews and designed and managed mail and online surveys to develop brand awareness for the Montgomery County food production industry. I also crafted a Smart Cities workshop with a planning team from the National Institute of Standards and Technology, the Technology and Economic Development Corporation, and MCEDC.
