As a nursery practitioner I support the physical, social, emotional and educational development of children from 6 months to 4-years-old. Providing predictable routines, a variety of sensory and other activities, as well as another reliable adult figure for the children, together with the team I ensure the children are happy and healthy. I also work in the holiday club which looks after children of primary school age where I facilitate nature-based activities and outdoor play.

In this part-time role I was responsible for delivering lessons across the primary phase of the Autism specialist school. I made positive relationships with the pupils and staff and worked well with the team to provide consistent holistic support for all the pupils with their learning as well as their social, emotional and mental health. This experience of working in a specialist school (the knowledgeable staff and the trauma-informed approach to education) ignited my passion for working with disadvantaged children with additional needs and contribute to the development a more equitable education system where all children thrive.

As a class teacher of Year 4 and then Year 5, I worked both independently and as part of a phase team to plan and deliver effective lessons across the curriculum. I made additional contributions to the school community such as running the children’s choir and initiating innovations to the Languages curriculum to raise the profile of languages within the school and improve pupils’ experiences. During these two years, I developed a particular interest in working with children with additional needs, especially those with Social Emotional and Mental Health needs and Autism. As a newly qualified teacher at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, I also demonstrated great adaptability and proficiency at learning new ways of teaching using online methods and alternative channels of communication with families to ensure children’s welfare.
