With my experience working as a BHT, I have learned a lot. I would go to my client’s school in the morning, engage, take data, make sure I focus most on my client. At home session, I would absolutely have fun and engage with my client, but I also would make sure we do some work and collect data. I’ve learned a lot with this job position and I know it will help me wherever my future takes me.

I volunteered at Columbia Animal Shelter over the summer of 2022. I mostly worked with cats and kittens. As for tasks, it depends what time you arrive. If I arrived in the morning for 2 hours, I would have to clean the 4 levels for each of the cats that they live in (they have 4 levels instead of one tight space kennel). I would make sure the floor is swept and mopped. I would make sure the dishes are cleaned. If I arrived in the early afternoon, I would have to do the chores that has to be completed, like sanitizing all of the door knobs, cleaning the bathrooms/restocking, sweeping and mopping floors, do laundry, wash dishes (if needed). If we were completely finished with our tasks, then you were allowed to make connections with the cats and kittens.

I would set up a table in the morning with fresh coffee, creamer, sugar, stirrers, water, and snacks. I also would observe the morning and afternoon group therapy. Not only I would observe, there were times where I would jump in and talk about the topic with the group if I had anything to say. I would also help make lunches for the members and joined in for the afternoon group and communicated with the members.

I would make sure to sign in when I arrived. I would make sure I grabbed a leash and bags for the dogs that I would walk. I was in the color blue stage which was the beginning stage. After searching for a dog that I was allowed to walk, I would make sure they were all set before we went outside. I would take them around a trail twice so they had exercise. Afterwards, I would either sit down with them somewhere, pet them, and talk to them or I would take them in a play area outside if it was available so they could get all of their energy out.

I supported the youngest group of students in the school by helping them with math and reading, doing fun activities with them, communicating with them if they were struggling with a math or reading problem, making sure that everything was set to go for the next day. I was also in charge of morning recess and making sure that all of the students were okay and safe.
