Mixed methods research about the built environment and physical activity:Qualitative research into decision-making for active living infrastructure (walking and cycling infrastructure and open spaces) at a local level involving semi-structured interviews with key stakeholders including urban and transport planners, public health practitioners, elected councillors and private sector developers. Research conducted in three areas of England and also in Jamaica.Quantitative research evaluating context, use and users of new walking and cycling infrastructure in the UK. Also the association between use and physical activity using different types of data (manual counts, route intercept surveys and longitudinal cohort data).Follow-up qualitative study about context and case study examples of new walking and cycling infrastructure.

Research analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the four forms of management which local government can choose for piped water supply systems in rural Benin which involve water user associations and the private sector to varying degrees. Through semi-structured interviews and discussions with key stakeholders, the varying management structures of affermage were understood and the factors that determine the choice of structure identified. Stakeholder perceptions were assessed and management issues identified. Recommendations were then made for improvements.
