Anna has worked for the past 30 years to improve the lives of some of Africa’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable populations. Anna founded Maloto - which means 'dreams' in her native Tumbuka language - in 2004 as a means of giving back to Malawi. Maloto supports three local organizations in northern Malawi: the Mzuzu International Academy (the northern region's first internationally accredited IGCSE primary and secondary shool); the Kwithu Community-Based Organization (which provides a broad range of social, educational and health programs to the community's most vulnerable women and children); and Kwithu Kitchen (the first wholly women-owned food processing cooperative in northern Malawi, helping the women increase their economic independence).Anna began her international development career with nonprofits like Action Aid, the Norwegian Refugee Council, the International Rescue Committee and Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children. Anna has worked in Mozambique, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Rwanda and her native Malawi with refugees and others affected by armed conflict, people living in extreme poverty, and people living with HIV/AIDS. In recognition of her empowering work with women in Malawi, she was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humanities by Mzuzu University, located in the regional capital of Mzuzu, Malawi. Anna was also the first recipient of Whole Women Healing Award: “Women of Compassion Award for 2007”. Anna divides her time between Mzuzu, Malawi and Nyack, New York, where she lives with her husband and two sons.
