Anna Ochoa O’Leary holds a doctorate in cultural anthropology (UA). She is currently holds the rank of Associate Professor in the Department of Mexican American Studies at the University of Arizona, and is co-director of the Binational Migration Institute, an association of scholars dedicated to the study of how immigration enforcement affects Latino populations regardless of legal status. Her current research and teaching assignments focus on the immigration, gender issues, the U.S.-Mexico border, and the culture and urban politics of Mexican/U.S.-Mexican populations. Recent projects examine the impact of anti-immigrant policies on the developments on the health and human development of Latino populations in Arizona. A second project involves a survey of officials responsible for the processing of human remains, including those of presumed border crossers in 44 U.S. counties that border Mexico. A Fulbright award in 2006 provided support for research of migrant women’s encounters with immigration enforcement agents. It provided the bases upon which playwrite Kara Hartzer wrote the play, "No Roosters in the Desert," which premiered in 2010. A subsequent binational research project investigated the reproductive health care strategies of migrant women in Arizona-Sonora migrant corridor. Recently Published:2013. Unchartered Terrain: New Directions in Border Research Method and Ethics. Tucson, AZ: University of Arizona Press (Co-edited with Colin Deeds & Scott Whiteford) 2014. Undocumented Immigrants in the United States Today: An Encyclopedia of their Experiences. ABC-CLIO/Greenwood Press2012 “Of Coyotes, Cooperation, and Capital: Social Capital and Women’s Migration at the Margins of the State.” In D. C. Wood & T. Matejowsky (Eds.), Research in Economic Anthropology (Vol. 32): Political Economy, Neoliberalism, and the Prehistoric Economies of Latin America. Bingley, UK: Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 133-160.
