Legal Assistant
I was the primary legal assistant in the homeownership division at MLS. I conducted initial interviews with potential clients with eviction cases in Michigan's 36th District Court and gathered relevant documents related to the forfeiture of their installment land contract to purchase their home. I helped low-income clients apply for various grants, property tax exemptions, and utility assistance programs to resolve their legal case and lower household expenses.Through the Office of Eviction Defense at the 36th District Courthouse, I provided support services to renters as well. I conducted intakes of low-income tenants facing eviction to determine their eligibility for our free legal services under the local Right to Counsel ordinance, drafted case summaries for attorneys to review, and connected tenants with relevant community resources.
