The interdisciplinary Narrative Stigma Reduction team is led by Lehigh’s Dr. Tracy Nichols. The research explores current knowledge and gaps in delivering harm reduction services to pregnant and parenting people who use drugs (PPPWUD), local, state, and federal policies regarding harm reduction practices in the U.S., barriers to care through implementing harm reduction services, and future data collection and needs for federally-funded harm reduction research.

Under supervision of licensed counselors and a board-certified psychiatrist, my role as an Outpatient Therapist Intern is to help provide client-centered, strengths-based counseling services to children, adolescents, adults, and families at the Malvern Trevose clinic in a confidential setting.As a psychodynamic- and DBT-oriented therapist intern, I discuss a variety of topics with clients, such as trauma, depression, anger, grief, self-esteem, relationships, anxiety, ADHD, and family dynamics. I work with a caseload of at least 10 clients each week for one-hour counseling sessions. We complete regular assessments to determine needs and outline next steps toward achieving growth and recovery.I have co-developed curriculum for and co-facilitated a Mindfulness Therapy Group for adults in-person at the clinic, where we focused on developing emotional awareness and regulation, distress tolerance skills, and self-compassion through guided meditation, body scans, journaling, and open discussion.

• Performed the duties of a Decision Support Coordinator within the Outpatient Recovery Center in Danville, PA.• The center supports residents of Columbia, Montour, Snyder and Union counties in Pennsylvania.• Made daily schedules and communicated client concerns and updates to doctors. • Together in Telehealth or in-person sessions, assisted clients in forming personalized recovery treatment plans.• A crucial aspect of the work is asking the client, “what matters to you? What is important to you in your life?” • Discussed Dr. Pat Deegan’s Common Ground Power Statements and Personal Medicine on the road to growth and recovery, to build resilience and to co-create an action plan before connecting the individual with their medical prescriber.

For the local newspaper covering happenings of surrounding counties in Central Pennsylvania, I conducted interviews, transcribed and wrote articles, and communicated with photographers to formulate informative journalistic pieces.

My funded research opportunity through the Iacocca International Internship Program and the School of International Training allowed me to explore views on parenting and mental wellbeing of women refugees in the Middle East.• Shadowed Jordan Health Aid Society (JHASi) staff and psychologists on a visit to the Polish psychosocial center in the Za’atari refugee camp. Here, I learned about anxiety counseling and treatments from psychologists in-person. •Also spoke with Mama Munira, the first midwife in Jordan who has revolutionized education of family planning methods and reproductive healthcare for refugees. • Interned at the Institute for Family Health’s Sweileh clinic in the psychosocial unit. • Shadowed professional mental health counselors and studied multicultural approaches to counseling, in the context of refugees’ reported experiences, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, OCD, sexual or gender-based violence. • Granted permission to observe individual, private counseling sessions with refugee women from Syria, Yemen, and South Sudan, and learned about refugees’ diagnoses and situations post-session with Dr. Shrouq.
