Associate Professor, Faculty Of Architecture , Design And Planning
While at the University of Sydney, I co-founded , with Adrian Snodgrass, the journal Architectural Theory Review which we edited from 1996-2011. I initiated the first ever Faculty public lecture series, Thursday Night Lectures, and ran this series from 1995-2011. My teaching in design studios and lecture courses emphasised the social, cultural and global role of architecture, adapting ethnographic tools and employing engaged inquiry to pursue a people oriented design praxis. I introduced study of UN policy frameworks such as the MDGs to architecture courses. With colleague Col James I developed innovative off campus, interstate, rural and international studios. Achievements in the 1990s include the organisation of New Housing in Vienna, the international conference, Home- A Place in the Urban Environment and the concurrent national housing design competition, and the Women in Architecture conference. I chaired the BSc and BArch degree programs, led curriculum reviews of each, was Head of Department of Architecture and Allied Arts, and organised Faculty partnerships with international universities, and coordinated architecture student exchanges. Between 2005-2012, in addition to regular teaching duties, I ran the Global Studio, a program of conferences and hands-on studios, offered in 4 countries over 6 years to over 600 participants from 66 universities and more than 30 countries with published, exhibition and film outcomes.
