Profile bio

About Anna Simpson

I was for a number of years a freelance theatre director and drama teacher, as well as founder and Artistic Director of a small theatre company for whom I also acted as the Company Manager. I managed all the day-to-day administration as well as Artistic duties. Alongside theatre and education I have often worked within the sales, customer service, and luxury retail industries. With the recent pandemic placing all theatrical work on hold for the foreseeable future it has given me time to reassess and think about my priorities: Consequently I am looking to pursue an office based role and the stability and routine that provides for a better work-life balance. My theatre work is highly stylised and physically driven: often described as visually striking, visceral and inventive, Anna employs unashamed theatricality and playful, ensemble based storytelling. My process focuses on the actor and utilising their collective bodies as a visual and creative tool, fusing choreography, mime and text to exploit the shared imagination between actor and audience in creating exciting, challenging, expressionistic work that entertains and provokes. I regularly adapt classic literature to dramatic form, as well as devising new work on socially provocative topics. As well as directing I have been a teacher and workshop leader, with over 8 year's experience devising and delivering drama workshops and short courses in various elements of physical theatre for young people and actors in training in schools and institutions across the UK, Ireland and internationally, including: University College Dublin, Read School of Dance and Drama, St Vincent's Girls' School Dundalk, Dundalk Youth Theatre, Activ8 in Bristol, Harris Academy. I was a Education Practitioner at the Globe 2014-2016. I held the position of Director in Residence at Dulwich College, London 2012-2014. I taught LAMDA Speech and Drama at St Paul's Girls' School 2015-2017 and I was a director and teacher at Stagedoor Manor in New York.I also have experience as a Teaching Assistant for under 12’s and as a one-on-one support assistant for children with special needs.I trained as a director at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, gaining an MA qualification. I have a BA in Psychology.

Listed skills include Theatre, Directing, Radio, Teaching, and 24 others.
