About Anna Simpson, Ph.D.

I am a physical oceanographer and science educator currently at Oregon State University. As a science educator, I strive to create formative, engaging learning opportunities for all students. I value the identities and perspectives that students bring to the learning environment and build connections to the learning objectives in the classroom. As an educator, one of my goals is to ensure that a student has a sense of belonging in the geosciences and develop their identity as a critical thinker, curious person and advocate for environment. As a researcher, I use observational data, novel methods and analytical tools to understand how tides and currents interact with steep topography and influence oceanic turbulent mixing. I think about the spatial and temporal scales in which heat, energy, and freshwater are distributed by this mixing in coastal fjord environments and open-ocean areas. I am interested in connecting different components of the earth system to better understand how these are inter-related and impact one another on different time scales.
