Environmental Educators are responsible for leading guided hikes and paddles at various locations at this historic great camp in the Adirondacks. Programs involve interpreting the ecology, history, and conservation issues of the area as well as helping guests learn about ecological processes and proper recreational practices. Other work during the season included building an outdoor learning area and developing original programming for the site, helping to run special events, and contributing to general management and cleaning of the camp.

Kalamazoo, Michigan Area

The Hazards Communication Department at Environmental Health and Safety focused on creating a safe campus environment. This position involved maintaining a variety of databases related to campus safety, conducting recurring tests across campus, and ensuring necessary maintenance and upgrades were being completed.

Colorado

RMYC partners with AmeriCorps to create conservation crews in trail, chainsaw, and fire crews that work on outdoor projects in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming. Trail crews were responsible for projects like digging trails, building fences, and building structures. All projects were partnered with the National Forest Service or National Parks Service and located in Dinosaur National Monument, Steamboat Springs, and Arapaho National Forest. A typical day included hiking and manual labor throughout the day, and crew members camped in tents for the duration of the season. AmeriCorps service also required education through weekly SEED workshops led by crew members, project sponsors, and other crew members.

Kalamazoo, Michigan Area

This internship focused on elements of both animal care work as well as public education on wildlife and conservation issues. Animal care included care for birds of prey, reptiles, amphibians, fish, small mammals, and farm animals on KNC property; providing animal care includes watching for health issues in baby or disabled animals, feeding, cleaning enclosures, handling, and providing minor medical needs to animals. The education portion focused on helping visitors to take away the best experience possible during their visit to the nature center, including assisting and leading programs featuring KNC's animals, leading hikes on KNC trails for wildlife encounters, and leading programs during KNC events.

Utica, Michigan

Responsibilities included for caring for dogs left in the care of the hotel for either day camp or extended stays. Day camp consisted of a room filled with approximately 5 to 15 dogs to play with, exercise, clean after, keep safe, and monitor for health problems. Outside of camp, dogs were always under supervision in their cages to make sure they were fed and given water, cages stayed clean, and dogs did not fight or succumb to extreme stress. This position involved both looking after the basic needs of the animals under our care, such as food, water, and sanitation, as well as more complex needs, such as preventing stressful situations and learning to adapt to each animal's personality.

Kalamazoo, Michigan Area

Responsibilities included seating people, answering questions, answering phone calls, checking on seated customers, delivering room service, keeping the kitchen organized, and helping other departments when necessary. Required strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage multiple time-sensitive tasks at once.
