I work closely with clients who have had their disability benefits rejected. I collect evidence and submit my findings to a tribunal. I then advocate on behalf of them in the tribunal.

When a vulnerable person is arrested, I am called into support them whilst they are in custody. My duties include ensuring the vulnerable person (VP) understands the nature of the interview and the questions being asked by the police. I must ensure the VP feels safe and has enough food and water and identify if the VP is becoming overwhelmed by the interview and communicate the situation to the police. Additionally, I must adapt my communication skills to the VP's specific needs. Volunteering as an appropriate adult has given me an invaluable insight into the workings of the custodial process and the opportunity to represent people who are in highly stressful situations. It has furthered my beliefs of the importance of equality in all areas of society, especially the judicial system.

I shadowed and observed three barristers appearing in cases ranging from rape to possession and drugs. This developed my foundational understanding into the workings of the court system.

In this role, I organised and chaired many discussion groups throughout the academic year. A highlight was being involved in a debate against the pro-life society at University regarding abortion.

I was elected to be the Chair of the Women's Network in September 2020 at the University of Bristol. I led a 12-person committee throughout the year, and campaigned for gender equality across the University. Additionally, I organised and hosted multiple panel events, our most successful being a celebration for International Women’s Day. Working alongside the committee, I booked speakers, organised the schedule and hosted the event, demonstrating my drive and commitment to campaigns I feel passionately about.

I volunteered for Bristol University Food Bank. My responsibilities included collecting donated food from cafes and restaurants and dropping them off at designated food banks throughout Bristol.

Nightline is a run-by-students service which offers confidential support, either by instant messenger or phone, to students throughout the night. As Secretary of the Committee my responsibilities were designing, editing and sending out a weekly newsletter to update our volunteers of the various activities and events that the Committee had organised, demonstrating proficient computer skills. I recorded the minutes of our bi-weekly Nightline meetings and was in charge of correspondence for the Nightline email.As a Trained Listener, my responsibilities included adopting a non-judgemental and empathetic approach when taking calls with students in distress. I was expected to communicate effectively with students when informing them of charities and support services I believed would be beneficial for them. Volunteering as a Listener for Nightline developed my ability to empathise with people undergoing difficult circumstances.

Teaching ‘The Talk’ is an organisation which focuses on ensuring teachers feel confident teaching Sex Ed to students. As a facilitator, my responsibilities involved creating and giving presentations to large groups of teachers regarding matters of gender identity, sexuality, and the importance of pronouns. I encouraged the teachers to talk about their fears and concerns when teaching Sex Ed and, with the teachers, we strategised solutions to ensure that both teacher and student felt respected. Most importantly, we created an environment which ensured that the teachers were able to air their concerns in a non-judgemental environment.Volunteering for Teaching ‘The Talk’ developed my public speaking ability, and now I feel confident talking in front of a large group of people.
