As 8i’s first and sole legal adviser, I was responsible for all the groups legal affairs including legal aspects of Series A and B capital raising (over US$40 million raised), dealing with various issues from re-domiciling the company from NZ to the US, administering the company’s ESOP scheme, working with US advisors in the development of IP and patent strategy, developing content licensing arrangements, advising the exec and board on unique and, at times, complex legal issues in a high-paced environment.I also assisted the company with other matters outside of the traditional legal counsel role including setting up various HR procedures and policies, preparing funding applications to Callaghan Innovation, and working with Immigration NZ to achieve Accredited Employer status.
