I have 24 years of experience in the field of education as a special educator, school counselor, and administrator. I am interested in supporting creativity and mental health and well being in youth through social emotional education that supports learner self-advocacy, non-violent communication strategies, and coping strategies to increase resilience. I believe that all school-based staff should learn and practice these strategies as well to better support a school climate in which empathy, creativity, effective communication, democratic participation, and self-advocacy are just as or even more important as the academic content. The success of our students depends upon the adoption of strategies geared towards resiliency in meeting the unknown challenges of the very near future. Independent thinking and expression of those ideas should be prioritized. Schools need to make space for the engagement of learners with their natural environment in collaboration with other learners.
