The first being the creation of a rapid diagnostic test for thyroid stimulating hormones (TSH) and thyroxine levels in the blood. The purpose of creating this assay is to make a test that is more accessible to both patients and doctors for rapid results and at-home testing for individuals at-risk or currently diagnosed with certain disorders, including hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. The next project was using Adaptive Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) for human serum samples to be able to diagnose diseases like Zika Virus, Chikungunya Virus, and Dengue Fever in tropical climates because standard PCR procedures tend to fail in these climates. I later moved forward to work on a low-resource nucleic acid extraction device that employs steel wool and a magnetic field to capture and concentrate DNA molecules.

Research InternThe National Institutes Of Health Jun 2018 - Aug 2018Bethesda, MarylandI worked with the National Institutes of Health for Summer 2018 to design a new control mechanism for a robotic exoskeleton to alleviate crouch gait in children with cerebral palsy via an Arduino IDE system, a programming software. We completed walking tests using VICON motion capture systems and processed the data in MATLAB and Microsoft Excel. By the conclusion of the internship, the new controller was working with the exoskeleton and human walking trials were beginning. -

Over the course of my internship, I had the opportunity to work with individuals who had experienced limb loss and learned about the various factors that must be accounted for when designing a prosthetic device for the human body.
