I started my career as an aspiring psychologist. Now I'm in marketing. There have been a lot of record-scratch-you're-probably-wondering-how-I-got-here moments. For starters, I wasn’t your typical college student. I went to the University of Washington at night with a bunch of people twice my age so I could work M-F. I was a psych major and my full time gig was at a mental health center that served mostly Seattle's homeless population. It was heart wrenching and at times, frightening. But that's where I discovered I loved tech; I helped the social workers get more savvy at a time when the medical industry was adapting to a digital world. So when I graduated and moved to San Diego, I went to work for small tech companies where I could learn and grow quickly. I took up marketing, project management, ops. Marketing allowed me to wear the most hats. Hats that were my unique abilities: strategy, writing, design, web. It even let me use my otherwise untouched psych degree. Eventually I was spread too thin though; I wanted to be more present for my kiddos. So I took an entirely different role at a big company. It went public while I was there. I crushed my KPIs, volunteered, generated ideas. But it was a big ol' company and the message was clear: Be cookie cutter. Stay in your lane. (Er, no thanks. 🙅🏻♀️)Wasn't sure whether I could pick a marketing career back up, but there was only one way to find out. I updated my certifications. Put myself out there. My good friend, Stacy Havener, took notice. It was perfect timing. She needed someone that could wear a lot of hats. That wasn’t afraid to change lanes.
