Serving as the digital coach of the newsroom, I keep abreast of digital developments and coach staffers to become stronger digital journalists. Through the development of best practices for social media, I plan and manage the social media strategy for the newsroom. I learn and test new trends, tools and techniques on the established platforms and analyze social media and readership metrics to enhance practices. I work with editors to train staff in the best ways to use social media to gather and present the news.

As the city government/business reporter, I pitched, wrote and edited monthly investigative, news and feature centerpieces and covered half a dozen municipalities in addition to county government, business and nonprofit sectors. I created a municipal blog that focused on making government more relatable and meaningful to readers and led newsroom in trainings on new media tools including Snapchat.

I wrote two to three stories daily in addition to local briefs and cops blotter. I also helped coordinate social media posts on Facebook and Twitter, strengthened the Herald’s use of video and implemented new social media outlets for the news organization.

Juggled a staff of more than 50 college students, a $90,000 budget and, under tenure on staff, launched a weekly Web show, a new website and quarterly magazine. Led the coverage of the 2010 midterm elections by pitching and delegating the work on a student voters’ guide and real-time election night reporting.

Joined editorial and budget meetings to determine content for daily newspaper and pitch coverage for future articles. Copy edited and designed pages on an as needed basis and wrote news, feature and editorial articles daily.

Waded dangerously close to hog lagoons for longer, in-depth persuasive piece and wrote localized editorials ranging from racial inequality to towing regulations. Designed op/ed pages daily and the metro section weekly.

Coverd town and county meetings, highlighting interactions with Elon University. Edited and designed voter's guide for municipalities and county elections. Wrote a variety of news and features articles ranging from nonprofit events, crime and cultural events.

Rushed to car accidents, bomb threats and county commissioner meetings for news and feature articles. Pitched, wrote and designed a quarterly page dedicated to senior citizens activities and concerns.

Served as a teen contributor for a hyperlocal weekly with a circulation of 2,700. Engaged in field reporting with a local church group and covered local business, tourism and in-depth features.
