During my third year at university, I undertook a 9 month placement at the institute for medical microbiology, immunology and hygiene in Cologne. I worked in a German speaking laboratory on a project investigating the relationship between NADPH oxidases and Staphylococcus aureus. During my project, I worked professionally as part of a research group, planned experiments, presented a weekly detailed report of my results, kept meticulous records and analysed and interpreted data using SPSS and GraphPad Prism. I prioritised tasks according to the research group's goals, ordered reagents, booked equipment and followed protocols. At the end of my project, I presented my findings to four other research groups at the institute. Furthermore, I became confident in answering telephone inquiries and proof read some of the group's posters and research papers.Techniques I learned during my placement included cell culture, cell transfection, qPCR, western blotting and fluorescence microscopy.
