Peace Corps is a volunteer program for development work run by the US government. During my two years in this program I lived one year in the coastal community of Reque, and one year in the mountain community of Huari. In both locations I worked with local community groups on environmental management projects such as compost and vermiculture workshops, establishing a sustainable tree nursery, and recycled art projects. I also frequently gave presentations to schools, government groups, and non profit organizations on the subjects of waste management, climate change, reforestation, and renewable energy. I did all of this while navigating local bureaucratic processes in a second language.
