I see myself as part of the wonderful community of young people, citizens, social entrepreneurs, researchers and politicians that are reinventing economics and society along more sustainable and inclusive lines and serving the common good of local communities. Especially working with students cocreating their young persons' guide to the future is a source of profound happiness and hope :-)My contribution to this is: - Systems approach : analysing lock-ins and possible leverages in a transdisciplinary way (so no 'blaming' of people of companies but helping them to take a helicopter perspective)- Redefining work (so as to include all gender roles) in the post-industrial society- Redesigning the way we valorise work (from 'scarce money' to 'abundant currencies'), from 'being employed for (private) profit' to 'being valorised for contributing to the wellbeing of the community'- Governance : how can political and legal frameworks strengthen these resilient initiatives and build bridges with mainstream institutions?- Responsible R&I: how can RRI be embedded in R&I institutions and policies at a decentralised level and in a radically democratic (transdisciplinary) way? I developed a methodological framework (MISC) that allows communities to define a common (sustainable) goal, to map missing links and leverages in both niches and regimes, and to create a common platform for political advocacy.

Before entering the university, Arne had spent a year in Cape Town, South Africa, where he was the only white student at San Bernardino High School. The injustice done to Africa touched him deeply, and he dreamed of doing something about it. He is still remembered there for stimulating his class mates – most of them from poor families – to develop their talents and to believe in a brighter future. In 2009 in the Khayelitsha township a sports field was inaugurated in his memory. As a student at KU Leuven Arne kept up this spirit. He constantly challenged his fellow students to discuss mathematical questions, or the deeper meaning of things, and to come up with their own insights and solutions. It was simply his way of studying, and it had a remarkable impact on the creativity and critical spirit of the whole group. When he and his team ‘The Knights Who Say Pi’ joined the LIMO competition in Leiden, they left the other teams far behind them. Yet, for Arne this was much more about team spirit and (slightly absurd) humour than about winning. After his sudden death in June 2008, Johan Quagebeur and Walter Van Assche of the Mathematics Department wished to keep Arne’s spirit alive. Together with the family they created the Fund, which was launched in 2009 by Rector Marc Vervenne. Its mission: to stimulate the exchange among students. For its tenth anniversary in 2019 the Fund decided to broaden its scope and align it with the Strategic Plan of the KU Leuven, the university’s vision on how to prepare young people of today for the complex challenges of the future – with sustainability as a crucial key. The Fund supports various initiatives at KU Leuven that encourage students to work together across disciplines for tackling the societal challenges of today and cocreating a more sustainable and just future. The current societal crises are summarised as 'antropocene', meaning that the industrial economy negatively impacts planetary and social ecosystems. The logical conclusion is that RRI should contribute to the development and uptake of new economic models. Today such models emerge as initiatives and organisations that aim at or support common wellbeing, so that is where RRI infrastructure and policies should be anchored. This requires specific, transdisciplinary methodological approaches and innovative business models. Show less -

The approach combined gender (the balance and equal valorisation of masculine and feminine roles and values) with systems thinking (the balance between efficiency and resilience) and social innovation. 'craftsmen' that can create innovative sollutions (instead of depending on the consumption of ready made sollutions), 3. people that take care of their own fitness and health (instead of adopting lifestyles that destroy mental and physical health) and 4.- above all - compassionate people who know that social groups cannot succeed if some of their members are left behind (he did not need Wilkinson and Pickett to know this...).I accompanied groups into wilderness settings and adventurous journeys that were designed to instill the above values (the 'four pillars') through an experiential learning process. Moreover, as a cook - cooking for about 100 people a day in a remote wilderness kitchen - I learned to make Montana's Mom's Dynamite Cheesecake.
