Mental Capacity Act Service

I work with adult learners of English at a Teacher Training College in Brussels. Together with my colleagues I prepare engaging lessons to target the pronunciation and vocabulary of learners, hold mock examinations and promote British culture.

Education Partnerships Africa seeks to make sustainable investments in schools in Kenya and Uganda. Over the academic year, 2014-2015, I balanced studying for my finals examinations with fundraising, and fundraised £2700, surpassing the minimum target by £500. This money was used in a project over the summer in Western Kenya. Working with two colleagues over ten weeks, I was responsible for researching, designing and implementing a £1800 investment programme in a rural secondary school. The focus was on providing adequate water supplies for drinking, hand-washing and educational purposes, and improving the supply of textbooks in light of the rapidly expanding student population.

I have completed ongoing work for Web-Translations in June 2010, August-September 2012, March-April 2013 and August 2014.This position saw me liaising with clients and freelance translators to facilitate translations, gaining experience with HTML, WordPress & Trados Studio and improving my awareness of how businesses are utilising translation and research to expand into international markets. Additionally, I took on a project which involved the translation of an entire website of approximately 140,000 words for a large hotel chain. I coordinated translation among six professional translators and proofread the document myself.

I prepared lessons for children aged 15-18, focusing largely on improving their speaking and listening skills in the English language. This experience was extremely valuable in developing my leadership skills, gaining confidence in public speaking and vastly improving my spoken French

I was elected by my peers to represent the student body regarding welfare matters on a governing committee. This position included a counselling role for which I received training from the Oxford University Peer Support programme. The role also saw me organising college-based events for roughly 300 new and existing students and regularly liaising with college welfare faculty members to ensure a secure environment for students.

I gained valuable experience in customer service and improved my awareness of the retail sector. Through this role I was able to carry out work in the community through the Voluntears programme, and my interpersonal skills were vastly improved by interacting with the public in what could often prove to be a high stress environment.
