As a Team Teach Tutor, my primary responsibility is to deliver customised Level 1 and Level 2 Behaviour Support Training courses to school employees. As a passionate choir leader, I have dedicated myself to creating a rewarding and inclusive experience for individuals with Down syndrome and their families. In collaboration with the mother of a young man with Down syndrome, I established the DSO Singing and Signing Choir in February 2019. Since then, it has become a beloved activity for DSO families.Our vibrant ensemble consists of children and adults with Down syndrome, along with their siblings and parents. We perform popular songs to entertain and raise awareness. One of my primary responsibilities as the choir leader is translating our chosen songs into Makaton. I am mindful of the communication challenges that individuals with Down syndrome may face, and I use Makaton to bridge any gaps and ensure that everyone feels included and understood. Signing helps to ease frustration and provides an additional means of communication for those who may have difficulty with speech and language. It also adds an extra layer of expression and connection to the music. Witnessing the joy, confidence, and personal growth of our choir members is nothing short of inspiring. Families also benefit from a supportive community where their loved ones can flourish and be celebrated. I am incredibly grateful to contribute to the holistic development of our talented individuals and foster a sense of belonging within our community. By embracing the power of music and Makaton, we break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a space where everyone feels valued and appreciated. The journey we embark on together brings us closer as a community and reminds us all of the transformative power of acceptance and inclusion.
