Supporting a number of charities, primarily family foundations and almshouses, I provided grant and almshouse management and governance support to the NFP sector. As such, I liaised with key stakeholders (for example trustees, auditors and investment managers), drafted policies and procedures, clerked meetings, and ensured that boards adhered to best practice, as laid out by the Charity Commission. In a nutshell, my role was to take on the sometimes onerous tasks of communication and compliance that can eat into busy trustees' time.The job was incredibly busy and varied and saw me wearing many different hats... just the way I like it! Most important was the job satisfaction I derived in helping charities fulfil their social mission.

Promoting a culture of welcome and inclusion to some of Swindon's newest arrivals - refugees and asylum seekers from around the world - Swindon City of Sanctuary is a networking organisation that helps bring different people together to support sanctuary seekers and works to dispel some of the negative beliefs about asylum and immigration.Whilst covering for the Executive Officer, I successfully bid for funds to develop the work in supporting homeless asylum seekers, as well as securing funds to undertake educational work in the wider community. I also oversaw volunteers, ran the communications and helped implement a new database to enable us to communicate more effectively with supporters, volunteers and beneficiaries.The job was only a temporary role as I was covering a maternity leave, but I relished the opportunity to help develop a new charity supporting a cause close to my heart.

As part of a team of five paid staff and many volunteers, supported refugees and asylum seekers new to Swindon. Being the person chiefly in the office, I was the first point of contact for queries and either delivered or oversaw all 'back office' functions that you'd expect of a small charity. Yup, everything from doing the accounts to processing volunteer applications to organising the social media, assisting with fundraising and giving the occasional talk. Crazy times, but great fun wearing lots of different hats and helping make good things happen!

With clients ranging from Linden Homes to Longleat, was part of a team assisting blue-chip companies on measuring customer satisfaction and engaging in other research. One moment I meet be speaking to customers about their experience, the next to clients about what those customers had to say. (We had some cool, not to say, BRAVE clients.)A particular pleasure was seeking testimonials from customers who had had positive experiences; always a pleasure to talk to happy people.I learned many things from my time at In-house: about research obviously, but also new ways of honing my organisational skills and dipping my toes into the waters of social media (crikey!). On a small archipelago of 2,200 people, assisted the Director of Community Services who had a far-ranging brief, covering housing, culture and leisure facilities and adult social care. This was no ordinary PA role! In addition to the things you might expect: diary management, correspondence, minute taking, updating the website, organising events etc., I also squeezed in the odd home visit to elderly isolated residents and totally revamped how we administered the blue badge scheme. It was only a temporary role as I was covering for someone's secondment, but I loved every minute!
