- Provided technical oversight and guidance to ensure proper implementation of nuclear criticality safety (NCS) requirements in Enriched Uranium (EU) Special Processing Production (EUSPP) Operations.- Served as a liaison between NCS Engineering and Production to verify adequate implementation of requirements and controls on equipment, processes, and procedures as outlined in NCS documents.- Supported NCS requirements surrounding the processing, storage, transfer, and handling of fissile material.- Led actions to resolve minor non-compliances and deficiencies along with proactively monitoring trends to reduce future NCS issues in EUSPP Operations.- Maintained accountability to the facility Production Directors for resolution of conflicting priorities, ensuring a healthy respect for Conduct of Operations principles. - Interpreted policies and procedures when questions arose regarding criticality safety principles and applications.

- Performed testing on various radiation detection instruments and equipment against the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) standards for commercial vendors.- As part of an effort with Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), developed and instructed course material and exercises for the Republic of Korea Army’s Nuclear Characterization Team. Course material pertained to health physics, radiological emergency response, and radiation detection fundamentals.- Developed course material and exercises for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction Office (CWMD). Course material and exercises pertained to radiation fundamentals, radiation detection instrumentation, regulatory control of radiation, and the transportation/monitoring/handling of radiation sources.- Conducted routine surveys of radioactive material areas and surrounding areas to mitigate contamination concerns and ensure personnel dose limits were not exceeded.- Coordinated the transportation of radioactive material according to the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC).- Maintained inventory of radioactive material and ensured material was stored according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and TDEC Radioactive Material License (RML) requirements.- Provided radiological source support for tactical training activities.

- Thesis research involving the use of radiation detectors, sensors, and robotics in a remote laboratory setting for educational purposes.- Laboratory experiments aided students in their understanding of both nuclear and physical security. The radiation detection experiments guided students through radiation physics and alpha/gamma spectroscopy. The sensor experiments showed how sensors can be programmed and implemented in facilities to increase physical security.

- Internship in the Global Security, Technology, and Policy group in the National Security Directorate.- MCNP modeling of radiation detectors and their application in the safeguarding of nuclear materials for the International Atomic Energy Agency. Detector materials included cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) and thallium bromide (TlBr).

Project: Development of a Multi-deployable Radiation Detection System for Radiological Emergency Response- Designed and developed a radiation detection system for backpack and vehicle deployment methods.- Integrated the system with an independent wireless network for communication with a tablet computer.- Developed a LabVIEW application that communicated with the system’s multichannel analyzer (by way of Maestro) to receive live-time count and spectral data. The application was designed to be easily operated by first responders in a radiological emergency response scenario. The interface of the application included the live-time count rate as well as a user-specified acquisition time that determined the frequency in which a spectrum was produced. All data from a given triage was automatically exported to a CSV file for subject matter expert (SME) analysis.

Project: Assembly of an Accelerator Microbeam Line for Materials Science Research- Identified irradiation-chamber equipment suitable for research with the accelerator beam line.- Studied radiation effects on novel cladding materials for nuclear power applications.- Assisted in the collection of data from accelerator experiments.

- Internship with fuel engineering and neutronics to provide the leading support and coordination for reactor core fuel management development, design, licensing, safety analysis, and methods development required to support commercial pressurized water reactor designs.- Independently characterized the fuel burnup and control rod worths of the core at the Davis-Besse Nuclear Power Station.
