My earliest memory is stacking the cushions from the couch on the floor to see out the living room window. One day after discussing this with my partner I returned to my mother’s house to find that the window I could not see from when I was little was less than knee height. This got me thinking about how many other things seem so big, but in reality, they are not as big as you may think – it is all about your perspective and where you are in life that will influence your views. Throughout my school years I was never really switched on and all my report cards said the same - “Anthony is smart and polite but does not apply his self”, this seemed like it was a nice way of telling me I was thick. My mum would tell me that the classroom just was not my place to learn - and she was right. Once I left school and started a practical job, I found it was a lot easier to ‘apply’ myself and knew that I was a hands-on person. When I started my joinery apprenticeship at 15 years old, I would stress out over the tiniest thing but as I grew more confident in my ability’s, tasks would become easier and I would no longer worry about the little problems that had once seemed like big problems. This allowed me to grow over the 13 years of working in the building trade, going from an apprentice joiner to someone who managed a team of tradesmen and overseen all the construction that was taking place within the company. Just over a year ago I made the biggest shift of my life and took a complete career change to become a Continuous Improvement Coach with PBI. This was a scary leap but working with such a great team and learning the hands on and practical ways of working I realised it was quite like what I was used to (even though I am now behind a desk and not on the construction site). I am glad I took the chance of changing my career as it has not only taught me so much about a new field of work, but I have also learned so much about myself as a person.
