The EB-CRC aimed to produce novel bioengineering technologies to extract valuable chemicals from waste, improve the efficiency of waste treatment and transform low value materials into high value by-products. EB-CRC was a medium sized CRC with a total Commonwealth investment of $23.5 million over 9 years and total resources from all partners (including the Commonwealth) of $70 million.

As part of my role with the EB-CRC I was appointed as Director, Intellectual Property Management and Commercialisation during the final year and half of the CRC's existence. In this role I worked with key researchers and commercial partners to provide for uptake adoption and absorption of Intellectual Property developed through the CRC.

Responsible for providing advice to the Minister in relation to the development of design principles for Marine Protected Areas and Marine Plan development in South Australia. The SWG successfully supported the Government of South Australia in the establishment of 19 new marine parks covering 43% of South Australian State Waters including some of the most ecologically significant environments in all of southern Australia.

Advisory services to the Board and senior management of AIL as they restructured the operations of Australian Bight Abalone Ltd and the associated group of companies. Work included liaison with regulatory authorities and the provision of technical advice on animal husbandry, animal health and biosecurity. The company commercialized in-sea production of green lip abalone Haliotis laevigata through their farm off-shore from Elliston in South Australia and produced between 60-80 tonnes of greenlip abalone per year.

The Natural Resources Management Council has the expertise to advise the State Government about the long term strategic directions for the management of the State’s natural resources.The Council works with South Australia’s 8 regional NRM boards, other government agencies and peak bodies to collectively implement the State NRM Plan. The State NRM Plan is a five-year plan and is critical to our economic, environmental, social and cultural future and reflects the objectives of South Australia’s Strategic Plan.

The Coorong Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth (CLLAMM) ecology program was one of only 5 programs funded through the CSIRO Research Cluster Fund. In this role I Chaired the bid team and secured funding of $4.7 million to support a three year, cross institutional research project that aimed to provide advice to managers on the benefit of releasing waters for environmental flows into the CLLAMM region.

The Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board has the important role of managing, protecting and in some cases, restoring the region's precious natural resources. To achieve its goals, the board works in consultation with the community, the three tiers of government and industry to develop and carry out a Regional NRM Plan for the region that sets priorities and targets - progress towards these are measured over time.The Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Board brought together a range of previous organisations, including Catchment Water Management, Soil Conservation and Animal & Plant Control Boards. By having them all under one umbrella, a more integrated and coordinated approach to the management of our soil, water, coastal and biodiversity assets can be achieved.

The Aquafin CRC (Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Finfish Aquaculture) aimed to provide critical technologies for rapid and sustainable growth of finfish aquaculture in Australia. Aquafin was a medium sized CRC with a total Commonwealth investment of $16.5 million over 7 years and total resources from all partners (including the Commonwealth) of $71.9 million. The CRC provided research to support the salmon and tuna aquaculture industries with a joint GDP of over $800 million per year.

I led a consortium of research providers and seafood industry participants in the development of the second stage proposal for the Australian Seafood Cooperative Research Centre. As Bid Director, I worked with Industry representatives to identify R&D needs for the Seafood Industry, to outline a comprehensive research program to address these needs and in the development of a comprehensive Commercialisation and Utilisation Program for the CRC which would ensure effective adoption of CRC outputs. In developing the CRC I secured participant commitments to investment totalling $110 million in the CRC including around $40 million in cash with the remainder as in-kind commitments. The bid was successful in attracting an additional $35.5 million from the Commonwealth Government.

Responsible for providing advice to the Minister in relation to management arrangements, legislative frameworks, policies and other mechanisms that were required to support the sustainable development of the Aquaculture Industry in SA. I was also on the interim-committee that worked with PIRSA Aquaculture to scope the relevant legislation (Aquaculture Act 2001)

In this role I worked to transform the Aquatic Sciences Strategic Research Area through a substantial expansion of research scope, staffing profile and funding. Over my 5 year tenure in the position I worked to build a team of researchers to support the development of a substantial environmental research capacity in marine and freshwater systems which resulted in the appointment of around 60 new staff (taking staff numbers from 65 to 125). This was achieved by attracting additional research income totalling $9.4 million per annum (increasing the funding for Aquatic Sciences from $7.5 to $16.9 million per annum).
