Throughout the past seven years in R & D with SUNY Geneseo then TAE technologies I have been able to professionally develop my skills as a researcher and engineer. My passions in physics began with particle acceleration and fusion reactions. I have 3-4 years of experience maintaining and experimenting with Geneseo’s 1.7 MV Pelletron tandem accelerator. In parallel to this research, I have taken many courses in a variety of engineering and physics-based topics including fluid mechanics, classical mechanics, stress analysis etc. Over the next four years, my research was primarily focused on characterizing deuterium samples for the DOD funded University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Electronics. After graduation, my goal was to directly contribute to the development of fusion energy sources. This came to fruition when offered a research-based position at TAE Technologies.Beginning as a Jr. Operator at TAE, I was presented with tough and unique problems to solve such as estimating machine parameters with the use of limited diagnostics and resolving unknown faults on complex systems. These challenges allowed me to develop professionally. Within the three and a half years that I’ve worked at TAE, I have managed to ascend to the position of Neutral Beam Scientist. In this position I had a large role in the engineering side of my projects which allowed me to obtain skills in Computer Aided Design and numerical thermal and stress analysis. While working as a scientist I’ve also been able to develop a manuscript which is currently under internal review and have made connections around the world at other fusion laboratories through our work and interactions at international conferences. The work I presented at these conferences is focused on characterizing and developing electrostatic grids for light ion propulsion.
