Second six pupil under the supervision of Rick Holland.Since starting on my feet, I have begun building a busy criminal practice across a broad range of Crown Court and Magistrates' Court work. Unusually for a pupil, I have already appeared in Crown Court trials, including for possession with intent to supply class B drugs and as led junior in a historic grooming case. I have also dealt with sentences, bail applications and interlocutory hearings in the Crown Court. My work in the Magistrates' Court has been similarly wide ranging. I am a Level 1 prosecutor and have been instructed to prosecute and defend in cases of assault and domestic violence, sexual offences, drugs, possession of a bladed article and driving offences. I have been regularly instructed to provide advice and have assisted King's Counsel with various research tasks, most notably producing a short compendium on Mauritian Banking Regulations. During my first six, I observed trials, hearings and conferences in a wide range of matters before thecriminal courts. That included cases of murder and serious violence, drugs, RASSO, robbery and theft, financial crime, tax offences and breaches of data protection laws.

Developed my research, witness handling and interviewing skills through conducting independent investigations into the standards with which inmates are treated. Regular contact with inmates in isolation and with those suffering from mental health issues taught me the importance of brevity and clarity when asking questions in an interview setting. Had the opportunity to advocate for inmates and staff. This includes a situation where inadequate guard practices on one of the wings resulted in increased rates of violence and drug use. My representations to prison executives resulted in procedural changes.

Organised and maintained the physical records of the HR and Recruitment departments. Through taking complaint calls from mental health service users regarding staff conduct, I developed both awareness of mental health issues and an adaptable, empathetic and patient communication style.

Learned how to effectively support and advocate for vulnerable witnesses at the Crown and Youth Courts, specialising in working with child victims of violent and sexual offences. Worked closely with members of disadvantaged communities with strong distrust in the justice system. Attended consultations with counsel and liaised between witnesses and judiciary, developing productive, and therefore successful, professional relationships with witnesses, judges and counsel.
