Dr. Anthony (Tony) Marsh received his undergraduate and MS degrees from the University of Western Australia and his Ph.D. from Arizona State University. He came to Wake Forest in August 1996 as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health and Exercise Science, was tenured in 2001, and promoted to Full Professor in 2012. He is an affiliate faculty member in the VT-WFU School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences and in Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine in the Department of Internal Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine.Dr. Marsh teaches Human Gross Anatomy and Biomechanics of Human Movement. He taught a Freshman Seminar class from 2004-2007. He has been nominated for the Reid-Doyle Prize for Excellence in Teaching (2000) and the Jon Reinhardt Award for Distinguished Teaching (2008). He served as the HES Graduate Program Director from 1997-2014. Dr. Marsh has served as the primary advisor for over 40 students in Honors, Masters, or PhD programs.The theme of Dr. Marsh’s research has been the assessment of the physiological and biomechanical determinants of physical function and the development and implementation of interventions of physical activity and weight loss to preserve, ameliorate, or rehabilitate physical function in older adults with various chronic diseases including overweight/obesity and sarcopenia. He and his colleagues have developed innovative methods to assess physical activity and function in older adults, and he has been the principal or co-investigator on multiple randomized controlled trials that have examined the role of physical activity and/or weight loss on muscle and physical function. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed manuscripts.Dr. Marsh is a Fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and a member of the Gerontological Society of America. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Journal of Aging and Physical Activity and Journals of Gerontology: Medical Sciences (the top ranked journal in the field).

Therefore, in this new position, Professor Marsh will be charged with championing College faculty in their pursuit of scholarly and creative excellence; serving as a liaison between the College and the Institutional Review Board and the Research Advisory Council; supporting URECA and faculty-student research engagement in general; working with faculty and College budget staff on grants; and serving as a liaison between the College and the Graduate School, the other Professional Schools and the Provost's Office, among other duties. This position will provide additional support for faculty research, scholarship, and creativity. It will foster high-quality, nationally recognized efforts across academic departments and divisions, and elevate the status of this work in the Teacher-Scholar model.
