Key Achievements:• Led the delivery of an in-house cloud analytics platform for Joy Global (Komatsu Mining Corp) with democratized big data visualization and analytics tools to process data from the globally distributed fleet of mining equipment, delivering insights to the business and customers via Smart Solutions. The platform replaced a purchased 3rd party solution that was expensive, did not scale and did not meet the developing needs of the business.Responsibilities:• Responsible for the delivery of a democratized cloud analytics platform to support the surface and underground mining businesses, including the developer experience and analytics insights for the surface mining fleet.• Collaboration with global teams delivering JoySmart solutions to customers to understand the evolving needs of the platform.• Manage development and operational budget of $2.5M, with team of 8 engineers.Key skills include:• Led platform development leveraging a decoupled architecture of open source, big data technologies on public cloud infrastructure. The development was necessitated by the failure of a ‘next-generation’ platform being custom-developed by a major USA technology vendor.• Pioneered the use of Lean & Agile delivery techniques within Joy Global to deal with uncertainty and project risks.• Evangelized the democratization of platform development as well as access – enabling collaboration and institutional learning from globally distributed teams of mining experts.

Engineering lead for the development of technologies to improve the safety and efficiency of mining operations, including: real-time equipment localization, collision avoidance and automated loading systems for P&H electric mining shovels, and the enhancement of non-line-of-sight remote control of bulldozers with 6DOF motion feedback, 3D video and task visualization.Responsible for all aspects of technology development: user and system requirements, operational risk assessment and safety requirements, system hardware and software architectural design, sensing and computer hardware selection, algorithm & software development, software verification and field testing of prototype systems.Responsible for project management: developing successful proposals for research funding, project planning, tracking project schedule and budget, managing relationships with OEMs and mining companies and project reporting.
